Outflow Series 1
June 4th - June 10th
Scripture:Matthew 5:1-12 "The Beatitudes"
Questions:*In verses 3 - 10, think about the opposite trait of what Jesus says is blessed.
For example, verse 3 says "blessed are the poor in spirit". The opposite of being poor in spirit is being prideful.
*Which of the 2 traits do you display more of, the one God says is blessed, or the opposite one?
*Which one of these traits are the most difficult for you to possess?
For example, you may choose verse 4, "blessed are those who mourn", because you don't like to experience sadness.
*Today, focus on just one area of weakness, and try to take at least 1 step closer to God's desire for you in that area of your life.
For example, if you chose verse 4, try to take the time to listen and relate to someone who is experiencing sadness or a difficult time in life.
Mourn with them. Show them God's love. Pray that God would give you an opportunity and for the strength and ability to complete it.
Scripture:Matthew 5:13-16 "Salt & Light"
Questions:*Why does Jesus call us the "salt of the earth" and the "light of the world"?
*Do you affect the world around you like salt increases the flavor of our food? How? If no, why not?
*Do you shine the light of Jesus to those around you, or do you hide your "religion" and keep it to yourself? Why?
What are you afraid of?
Can you think of someone who needs to see the light of Jesus in you?
*Who is a good example in your life of a "salty" "light -sharing" Christian?
*Today, make 1 effort to affect the world around you by being salt & light. Maybe it's just being a friend to someone.
*Also, write an email or send a card to that person who is such a good example to you.
* Remember to pray and ask God to help you as you try to be His salt and light. Pray for the right opportunity.
Scripture:Matthew 5:43-48 "Loving Enemies"
Questions:* Do you have enemies? Think about why... How can you love your enemy?
*What does verse 45 mean? If you're not sure, ask someone to help you.
*Have you even shown love to someone who didn't necessarily "deserve" it?
Has anyone ever shown love to you when you didn't "deserve" it?
How did that make you feel?
*Other scripture references: Romans 12:20-21, Luke 6:27 -36
:*I bet you're starting to get the hang of what your application section will involve…
Today, show love to an enemy. I don't mean run and give them hugs and kisses.
Change the way you respond to them. If you usually ignore them, today say Hi with a smile.
If they usually make you angry, choose not to display that today. Smile instead & walk away.
If you don't necessarily have an "enemy" but there are many people around you who you have never spoken to, find someone who needs a warm smile and say Hello. Again, pray for God to give you the right opportunity.
I'm not going to tell you this will be easy, but it will be "right" and pleasing to God.
Scripture:Matthew 6:19-24 "Treasure"
Questions:*What are your treasures? How do we store treasures in heaven and not on earth?
*Where are your treasures now? If you're not sure, where is your heart? What is always on your mind?
*WOW! Read verses 22 and 23 again. What do you let your eyes view? What do you think "grows" in your heart and
mind as a result of what you look at? Are your eyes helping your body to be full of light or darkness?
*Thinking back to Sunday Night when we talked about how you spend your time, what master does your schedule
show you are serving?
Application:*Throughout today record your thoughts. What is always running through your mind. Also, pay careful attention
to the things you allow your eyes to view. Write these things down throughout your day. Spend time reading
over what you recorded at the end of the day. Ask yourself "who or what is my Master based on what I wrote."
Scripture:Matthew 6:25-34 "Jesus Teaches about Worry"
Questions:*What is worry? (Here's a hint - it's SIN!!! A lack of trust in God.)
*What do you worry about? Why?
*Is there a benefit, or something good that "grows" from worry? Does it solve anything?
*What is the solution to worry? Read verse 33 again.
Application:*Pay close attention to your thoughts again today. What is worrying you? Write it down.
*If there is a genuine problem in your life that is affecting your safety, ask someone for help. If you recognized that
you are worrying about a lot of things, surrender those worries to God. Ask him for the strength to trust Him.
Scripture:Matthew 7:21-27 "Building on a Solid Foundation"
Questions:*What is the will of the Father (verse 21)? How will we know we are doing it? Reread 1 John 2:3-6
*Are you building on the rock - putting His Words into action, or are you building on the sand?
Application:*Today's lesson is the whole point of this week's challenge. Read James 1:22-25. Sometimes we read the Word, but we fail to apply it. I hope this has helped you to see how you can read God's Word, and then take steps each day to apply what you have read. If you did the challenge this week, what are your thoughts looking back?
*Pray today and ask God to help you to become consistent at both reading His Word daily & applying it. Make a plan!
